He is the former head coach of Grand Valley State University (1996–97) and Central Michigan University (1997–2006). He has also been an assistant coach at Michigan. In 2002–03, Smith led the Chippewas to the Mid-American Conference title and an appearance in the 2003 NCAA Tournament — the school's first since 1987. There, CMU recorded a first-round victory.
